Rough holidays

"Of course, it wasn't like it is nowadays," recalls, was heard again and again when people from oberbach were asked about the carnival of earlier times. But clearly: "foasenoicht and kirmes woarn die grobte feiertag", says backersch hermann. In any case, there was a good party – and a good one at that. In oberbach there were two taverns "schulbarwe" (guesthouse stern) and "the ruppels". Both had at that time a hall for the coarse celebrations in the village. There was a lot of activity. "And some people have taken a heavy intoxication home with them", remembers kurt ziegler, born in 1942, from the stern inn.
And so until the "hall" was built, the house of the guest, celebrated in both inns, which were also club halls. That was before the time of the clubhouses. "Until the fire in august 1963 there was a "foasenoicht" every two years in our hall, kurt, now a senior host, remembers. "We also had a children's carnival – on rose monday."
On tuesday, the children were out and about in small groups, recalls his wife heidi, born in 1954. "The children were masked and sang a song in front of the houses. They got sublimes or even money from time to time. They then used the stickers to party", she says.
The favorite costumes of the girls at that time were red cap, hungarian or princess. The boys' favorite costumes were hollander, pirate and even cowboy. Kurt himself, as a child, also moved from house to house with others "that was the custom in those days." Then a little saying was recited or something was sung briefly. For this there were subes as a reward.
On carnival tuesday there was usually a bar going on. As usual in many villages of rhondo, the baren-treiben belonged to the fasenacht. The bar, his driver and some masked figures paraded through the village. "Especially at the schnapps distillers they stopped and then of course in the two "wirtshausern", female kurt ziegler still.

Elephant instead of bar

According to his recollection, the traditional straw elephant became a straw elephant twice – probably on some whim. "The elephant was made by two boys. They were connected with a ladder – as a ruck – and were firmly bound into the frame. And that was once almost ubel ausgegangen." Whether it was due to the schnapps they were given or whether it was simply poor visibility remains to be seen. In any case, the straw animal fell quite unhappily – and the two men hung lashed in the ladder and could free themselves only with difficulty.
"I was also once the straw bar", backersch hermann" remembers, vintage 1934. It must have been half a century ago. He was a young "codger and ready for any kind of fun. "First they put a basket of potatoes over my head and then tied me completely up with straw", he laughs. But it was not quite so cozy under the straw wrapping after all. Because it was heavy and scratchy and "I saw almost nothing anymore", he says "but the bar is still managed."
But even at his time it was no longer the "arwes straw" (pea straw), as it says in the rhon literature. "We took oat straw", he remembers "we then went through the village and rang the bells at the houses. And schnapps – well – it was fasenoicht after all. I drank the schnapps with a tube like this one." And then he remembers: "we made an incredible mess in the houses or in the economy". We didn't realize it before." And then "once, in such a room, there the bar then also burned." How it turned out, he no longer knows exactly – the bar was probably extinguished in time.

Local politics as a concern

Otto kirchner from the "bannertshof" im tal nach eckartsroth, born in 1925, remembers: "as children, we just painted ourselves and dressed up somehow with what was there. Then we went to the village of ruber and joined the groups there. Here in heruben, in eckartsroth, there was nothing." He remembers above all a later time, when the carnival costumes came up. "We from the kalbertal have then always made a cart", he remembers. He had driven it.
According to this, the first real carnival parade was held in the village in 1966. Otto and other "kalbertalers were enthusiastic. Local politics was their concern "build the road into the kalber-reich – our vote belongs to you", there before an election. Because the road over to eckartsroth was bad. In the following year the eckartsrother propagated the "free milk and meat economy" in the calbertal and had the idea of a "rumpfsteak-factory".
With a smoking chimney on their wagon "the relations with the amis have made this possible" – they smoked the village. "In 1994 we went with our car to the carnival procession in bruckenau", remembers otto. "But when they then demanded an entrance fee from us participants, that was enough for us." Carnival was celebrated at that time in the "witzels-hall", probably until the construction of the "hall", the house of the guest. At the carnival dance there were still a lot of masks at that time.
The children's carnival was always celebrated here, first traditionally on carnival tuesday, later on carnival sunday. It was organized alternately by individual associations, in the meantime by the "vereinsring". Only occasionally a local carnival procession was on the way.
