M 113 now eye-catcher in the museum

Earlier than expected, but most welcome, was the arrival of the fourth armored vehicle at the documentation center "a border garrison in the cold war in mellrichstadt’s former barracks.

The "M 113" personnel carrier has now been installed there another exhibit of this special museum has found its place near the main gate, together with the "schutzenpanzer kurz hotchkiss and the "schutzpanzer lang HS 30".

The "marder" armored personnel carrier originally parked there made room there and was moved right next to the former kommandeursgebaude, the current doku-zentrum.

All four tanks had once been in the service of the bundeswehr. And so the armored infantry battalion 352 had also been moved out of mellrichstadt’s former barracks.

As was the case with the relocation of the "marders in the hainberg-areal the company streck-eisenmann from mellrichstadt helped again energetically and free of charge. Without the use of the company’s low-loader, it would not have been possible to transport the MTW M 113 from its previous location, the rhon barracks in wildflecken.

It was not only the loading in wildflecken that was tricky, but also the unloading in the hainberg area in mellrichtstadt. With the help of a wheel loader and an excavator, however, they managed to pull the nine-tonne vehicle off the low loader and tow it into the gap next to the other two tanks without any accidents or complications.

Junior boss jochen schumm and his colleague louis robdeutsch from streck-eisenmann demonstrated masterful handling of the heavy equipment, which is normally used for civil engineering. They were assisted by julian dytrt, who lent a hand when it came to securely lashing the MTW to the low loader.

Tank with holes

There is also an information board for the M 113, which shows, among other things, that this lightly armored personnel carrier could carry up to 13 soldiers, reached a top speed of 60 km/h and had 360 liters of fuel in its tank.

This tank, by the way, had been deliberately perforated in the museum specimen, and other "demilitarizing measures" had also been taken measures have been taken to ensure that the drive cannot be used. This was also the prerequisite for the KFG to buy it as the supporting association of the doku center.

In handling the bureaucracy with the appropriate military authorities, kai sell put in a lot of effort and thus made the purchase possible. Sell is one of the two deputy chairmen of the "kameradschafts- und freundeskreis der garnison mellrichstadt", who established the doku-center and since then has devotedly maintained and expanded it.

When the work was finished, all those involved met in the beer hall of the documentation center for a snack. In a short speech, the chairman of the KFG, gerd hohn, praised the action and was pleased that the relocation and transport of the tanks had gone smoothly and without incident. KFG would not have been able to afford the purchase of the M 113, hohn pointed out, if it hadn’t been for karl-hermann reich, the docu-center’s great friend and sponsor, who reached into his private pocket and donated the 3,000 euros the bundeswehr wanted for it. He therefore received a very special thank you from gerd hohn and his friends. Hohn also expressed his gratitude to jochen schumm and his colleagues from streck-eisenmann for their practical help, which was also worth money and indispensable.
